How Regatta and The Breakthrough Fund Are Transforming Access to Outdoor Learning
A real story from Tinsley Meadows Primary School at PGL Dearne Valley
This year, our partnership with Regatta Great Outdoors is making wider impact — moving forward with our purpose at the heart of everything we do. We know that one of the biggest barriers to outdoor education isn’t enthusiasm or willingness… it’s financial pressures. We believe that all children should have access to adventure, but lack of funding or even suitable outdoor clothing can get in the way of that goal.
That’s why Regatta Great Outdoors is supporting The Breakthrough Fund by providing waterproof clothing for pupils who need them most. Taking an experience that may feel out of reach and turn it into a reality. This purpose-led addition helps ensure every child can step outdoors feeling comfortable, confident and ready to take part — whatever the weather.
One of the schools to benefit from the fund is Tinsley Meadows Primary Academy in Sheffield, who received a Breakthrough Fund trip to PGL Dearne Valley for their residential this year. For many of their pupils, this was their first ever experience away from home — a milestone the school was determined to meet for every child.
“The opportunity to experience a residential trip is a valuable and memorable primary school event, which we want as many of our children to access as possible. This year, the Breakthrough Fund has enabled more of our families to participate in this year’s trip and the offer from Regatta has ensured that all children are much better equipped to fully participate and enjoy all aspects of the residential experience.”

With funding support and high‑quality outdoor kit on hand, pupils arrived feeling confident, included and ready for adventure — with no worries of bad weather getting in the way. Teachers shared how pupils grew in resilience, teamwork and self‑belief across the course of the residential, with many trying activities they never imagined they could do.
This is exactly why The Breakthrough Fund exists: to remove barriers for every young person so that they can experience the power of outdoor learning.
