When you start planning your school trip with your students, it’s not just items that you plan to remember (although they’re still important). We know that teachers put a heartful of effort into making sure learning outcomes are on point and relevant, and that everything is in place to make for a perfect learning experience. So, we thought we could put everything in one place with a field trip checklist for teachers, so you can plan the best field trip for your class!

Learning aims

First up on the field trip checklist for teachers is learning aims and objectives. Nailing these down will help you with your lesson and activity planning, so you’ll know exactly what you want your students to gain from this experience. If you’re going on a Geography field trip, maybe your learning aim is for students to understand how a certain weather process works. Having clear goals will always help steer your trip in the right direction!

Schedule

Have a schedule and try to stick to it as best as you can. If you’re on a self-taught field trip and are doing the teaching yourself, then you’ll want to make sure you’re able to fit in all of the content that you’d like your students to learn. When you have a schedule it just makes everything flow super-smooth, so there’s no stress when you’re away from the classroom.

Lesson plans

Now you have your learning aims and objectives, it’s time to plan your lessons. How will you split these up? Maybe one lesson throughout the day or even more depending on the learning exercises you’ll be getting up to. What kind of activities and adventures will you be having with your students? There’s so much for your students to explore when you’re on a school field trip, such as investigating rocks and weathering, finding local habitats and lots more.

Activity equipment

If you’ve planned some practical experiments then don’t forget to add the equipment you need to your field trip checklist. If you’re going on a school trip to one of our PGL locations, speak to our team before you arrive to see if we have the equipment that you need, saving you the space when travelling. Perhaps you’ll be measuring the speed of wind with an anemometer, or assessing sand on the beaches.

Communication tools

How will you stay in contact with your students when they’re off investigating and exploring? Maybe you’d like walkie-talkies, or even whistles so your class can communicate with others and yourself.

Transport

How will you get to your field trip location? Will you be getting a coach? Or maybe you’ll have camped somewhere and you can walk to your destination. At PGL, many of our locations are surrounded by extraordinary environments such as beaches, cliffs, and more, which make for perfect field trip destinations, especially for your Geography and Science students.
