What are interpersonal skills?

Interpersonal skills are all about the ability to communicate well with others. They include:

  • Verbal communication
  • Non-verbal communication
  • Listening skills
  • Negotiation
  • Problem-solving
  • Decision-making

How your team develops in these areas can impact each and every aspect of the way your team play. But how do these teamwork and communication skills make such a difference in sports?

What is the importance of teamwork in team sports?

Teamwork is ultimately at the core of every team sport. Every individual could be super-talented, but it’s how individuals work together to better themselves and collectively work towards the end goal.

It encompasses motivation too. If your team members are encouraging, enthusiastic and motivational, then it can help drive towards victory, giving everybody the belief that they will succeed! Effective teamwork can help your team’s game flow and cohesiveness, with better understanding and decision-making.

Why is communication important in team sports?

Communication is one of, if not the most important aspects of team sports. By improving your team’s interpersonal skills, you could see improved verbal and non-verbal communication as well as listening skills.

For example, if your team can communicate effectively during a game situation, it can help support players in different situations. Such as when there is an opponent nearby in football, or to indicate where they would like the ball to be passed to in netball.

Another reason why communication is important in team sports is that it can help a team overcome a challenge. For example, if your team have good communication skills then they can share ideas and discuss ways to improve, react to other team’s tactics and better themselves. This then leads to excellent problem-solving skills!

Communication skills are vital tools that when used effectively can really enhance how a team works together.
