These days, kids have a variety of clubs to choose from, ranging from football and netball to swimming and even archery. But there is one organisation that has been inspiring young girls for generations: Girlguiding!
But how did it all begin? What is its mission? And what thrilling adventures and benefits does it provide? Don’t worry, we’ve got all the information you need about Girlguiding covered in this blog!
What is Girlguiding?
Girlguiding is the UK’s largest charity dedicated completely to girls and young women with 300,000 Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers between the ages of 4-18 years. It is committed to empowering girls and young women of all ages to find their voice and become confident, responsible, and active members of society.
In a world where gender stereotypes and societal pressures often constrain girls, Girlguiding breaks down these barriers by creating a safe, supportive and inclusive environment where girls can simply be themselves. Their mission is clear: “Whoever they are, wherever they’re from, girls can do anything.”
Through learning, fun, friendship, and adventure, girls can realise their potential, build important life skills, and make a positive difference in their communities and beyond. It’s all about giving girls the tools they need to thrive and succeed, all while having a blast along the way!
When was Girlguiding founded?
Girlguiding boasts a long and fascinating history, tracing its roots back to 1910 when the visionary Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Scout movement, and his sister Agnes Baden-Powell founded the Girl Guides Association.
Previously, groups of girls under the age of 11 were called Rosebuds (now Brownies), while a Senior Guide group, later renamed Rangers, was established in 1916. The youngest addition, Rainbows, joined the Girl Guides family in 1987.
Since its inception more than 100 years ago, Girlguiding has grown into a worldwide organisation, hosting a range of impactful events. From the longstanding GOLD (Guiding Overseas Linked with Development) programme and vibrant celebrations like the all-girls Wellies and Wristbands festival to engaging in Pride marches across the UK in support of the LGBTQ+ community.
Different groups within Girlguiding
Girlguiding offers a range of groups tailored to meet the diverse needs and interests of girls at different stages of their lives. These include:
Rainbows (ages 5-7)
Rainbows introduce young girls to Girlguiding with fun activities like crafts and games, with the opportunity to earn skill-builder badges such as communication and first-aid. Once a fully-fledged Rainbow, they’ll receive a special Promise badge.
Brownies (ages 7-10)
Brownies enjoy a mix of activities including outdoor exploration, camping weekends and community projects. There are lots of Interest badges to earn between unit meetings like the Recycling or Booklover badge.
Guides (ages 10-14)
Guides provide a platform for girls to develop leadership skills, explore new interests, and make lasting friendships. This includes outdoor pursuits, cooking, creating advertisements, and organising charity fundraisers. Guides can also become a Rainbow or Brownie helper with a local unit.
Rangers (ages 14-18)
Rangers have a flexible programme including leadership development, community service, and career exploration. Badges for Rangers include topics such as animation, blogging, and even awards like the Commonwealth and Duke of Edinburgh.
The benefits of Girlguiding
There are a multitude of benefits to being part of Girlguiding. Throughout their time as a Rainbow, Brownie, Guide and Ranger, girls gain practical life skills such as outdoor survival techniques, first aid, and effective communication to help build confidence, leadership skills, teamwork, and resilience. Moreover, Girlguiding encourages girls to explore their interests, pursue their passions, and develop a strong sense of identity and purpose.
Girlguiding Activities
From outdoor adventures like camping, hiking, and orienteering to indoor activities such as arts and crafts, STEM projects, and getting out into their local community, there’s something for every girl to enjoy at Girlguiding.
