At school, learning and knowledge take centre stage, but social connections are just as important for personal development and growth. After all, building meaningful relationships can significantly impact a student’s academic experience.

As leaders in organising adventurous residential school trips, we aim to bring students together while enhancing their skills in a fun and educational way.

So without further ado, let’s dive into why relationship-building is so vital for students.

The importance of building relationships for students

1. Facilitates teamwork

One of the most significant benefits of relationship building is facilitating teamwork. When students form strong bonds, they learn to work more effectively in groups. This cooperation is essential when it comes to classroom projects or sports activities,  teaching children the value of working together to achieve common goals.

2. Encourages empathy

Building relationships encourages students to become more empathetic, allowing them to appreciate different opinions or views. This, in turn, creates a more supportive and inclusive environment. Additionally, students learn to handle conflicts with respect—a key skill for navigating social interactions both in and out of the classroom.

3. Reduces feelings of loneliness

As humans, we all crave a sense of belonging and building relationships can mitigate feelings of loneliness for students. This helps them feel accepted and valued by their peers, boosting their overall well-being and leading to a more positive and productive school experience.

4. Builds confidence

Having positive relationships can significantly boost your confidence. Students who feel self-assured and supported by friends, family, peers and teachers are more likely to get involved in their studies and try new things, like abseiling down a 10-metre wall or zooming through the air on a zip wire!

5. Develops interpersonal skills

Finally, building relationships helps students develop key interpersonal skills, including verbal and non-verbal communication. They learn to express themselves clearly, listen actively, and interpret social cues effectively, which is crucial for future success in personal and professional settings.

PGL’s Relationship-building activities for students

Our activity centres provide an ideal setting for students to bond while having a blast in a safe and supportive environment. Here are some favourite relationship-building activities at PGL:

  • Giant Stand Up Paddle Board: This activity requires students to work together to coordinate and balance on the water.
  • Problem Solving: Engaging in problem-solving tasks will challenge your students’ critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Orienteering: Students work in pairs or small teams to locate control points across the grounds, enhancing their cooperation and map-reading skills.
  • Jacob’s Ladder: This challenging activity involves climbing a giant ladder in pairs. The higher you go, the more you rely on each other for support.
  • Sensory Trail: Navigating a sensory trail with limited visibility helps students develop trust and communication as they rely on each other to complete the course.
